A few thoughts from ALBA’s executive director, David McArdle

“This year has proven to be the most challenging yet rewarding since ALBA Editing & Proofreading was founded in 2010.

A key focus has been the ‘human’ value our editors add, necessitating even higher standards.

Here are a few examples:

Consistency is crucial. After editing a document, we always review it multiple times to ensure coherence and maintain the author’s voice. This requires experience, care, patience, and often late hours. Thankfully, our office has a new world-class coffee machine!

Words mean everything. True to one of ALBA’s mottos, we meticulously consider the use and purpose of every word, whether it’s avoiding repetition or selecting terms that suit a specific audience or nuance. Finding the right word is like placing the final piece of a puzzle; it’s both our duty and our passion..

Tone matters. There are distinct differences between an academic journal article and a self-published thriller, primarily due to the audience. Over the years, we’ve honed our ability to adapt writing styles to fit specific readerships, always striving to provide the most appropriate edits.

Overall, 2024 has brought an unprecedented focus on the utility of human intelligence, and at ALBA, we aim to demonstrate its complete and unwavering irreplaceability.”
